At-Home Teeth Whitening FAQs

No other equipment is required for your at-home whitening. You only need your custom trays and gel.

It is impossible to predict how many shades teeth will actually change. This is variable because of tooth shape, size, composition, and exposure as well as variability in usage and timing. As long as you are not experiencing sensitivity, you can continue to whiten until you are satisfied.

Tooth whitening is generally stable within a few shades. However, there are factors that can shorten how long results last such as thickness of enamel, diet/dye exposure, age, and habits such as smoking/vaping. For this reason, we recommend whitening once per month for 4 hours after you reach your desired tooth shade.

If you take proper care of them, your custom whitening trays should last several years. Remember to clean them after every use and to wear your retainers as instructed every day so that your teeth do not shift! If your teeth shift, your whitening trays will likely no longer fit.

No, we do not recommend using your retainers to whiten. The carbamide peroxide active ingredient has a dehydrating effect and could cause cracking or erosion to your retainers.

If you would like to replace your whitening trays that are lost or no longer fit, please call us for an appointment to scan your teeth. The fee will be $300 for new whitening trays.

If you feel tingling on your gums while whitening, some gel may have extruded onto them and we recommend wiping them with a cotton swab or wet tooth brush. If you notice that your gums are red and irritated after whitening, they may have a minor chemical burn that should heal within 1-3 days. We recommend swishing with warm salt water and gentle brushing of the area. If the irritation persists longer than 3 days, reach out to your general dentist.
